Get to Gettin'

Now the LORD had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father's house, unto a land that I will shew thee: And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing: And I will bless them that bless thee, and curse him that curseth thee: and in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed. So Abram departed, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him: and Abram was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came. And Abram passed through the land unto the place of Sichem, unto the plain of Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land. And the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said, Unto thy seed will I give this land: and there builded he an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him. And he removed from thence unto a mountain on the east of Beth-el, and pitched his tent, having Beth-el on the west, and Hai on the east: and there he builded an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD.-Genesis 12:1-8***When Abraham (Abram the Hebrew) was living in an idolatrous environment in Ur in southern Mesopotamia, the Lord God told Abraham to leave his country and kin and come into the land he would be shown. Abraham, his wife Sarah (Sarai), their father Terah, and nephew Lot, left Ur and journeyed to Haran (Charran) in northern Mesopotamia. After 205-year-old Terah died in Haran, the Lord God spoke to Abraham. Obediently, Abraham, Sarah and Lot journeyed with their servants and possessions to Canaan, the land that became known as the Promised Land. Before 175-year-old Abraham died in Canaan, Abraham:

-received an abundance of goods from Pharaoh, the king of Egypt.

-gave Lot the opportunity to choose the portion of the land that Lot wanted for himself.

-received promises from the Lord God regarding the land and descendants.

-rescued Lot and others from 4 enemy kings and gave 10% of the captured goods to Melchizedek (Melchisedec) the priest.

-was in a deep sleep while the Lord God made a covenant with him.

-was intimate with Hagar, Sarah's Egyptian maidservant, according to Sarah's suggestion and with Sarah's permission. Ishmael was born to Abraham and Hagar when Abraham was 86 years old.

-received assurance from the Lord God. The Lord God gave Abraham and Sarah a new name. The Lord God gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision, and 99-year-old Abraham, 13-year-old Ishmael and every male associated with Abraham's household was immediately circumcised.

-received a visit from the Lord and 2 angels and was given assurance that Sarah would give birth to a son, although Sarah had never given birth to a child.

-hospitably steered the 2 angels towards Sodom and spoke to the Lord God about any righteous inhabitants in Sodom.

-saw the smoke rising from Sodom, Gomorrah and the entire area.

-received an abundance of goods from King Abimelech, the Philistine ruler of Gerar.

-circumcised Isaac, the only child born to Abraham and Sarah. Abraham was 100 years old and Sarah was 90 when Isaac was born, and Abraham circumcised Isaac on the 8th day after Abraham was born.

-sent Hagar and Ishmael away, following Ishmael's actions, Sarah's request, and with permission and assurances from the Lord God.

-made a covenant with Abimelech.

-obeyed the command of the Lord God and took Isaac to a mountain in Moriah in Canaan to offer Isaac as a burnt offering.

-bought a cave and its surrounding land from Ephron, a Hittite property owner in Canaan, to bury 127-year-old Sarah after Sarah died.

-sent his top servant to Abraham's relatives in Haran, to find a maiden among them for Isaac to marry. The servant returned with Rebekah.

-married Keturah. Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah were born to Abraham and Keturah.

Notably, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, and many of their ancestors, and many of their descendants who reigned in Jerusalem in the Promised Land are listed in the biblical genealogies of Jesus the Christ, the Son of God.-Genesis 11:26-50:26, Exodus, Numbers 20:1-29, 27:12-23, Deuteronomy 31:1-30, 32:44-52, 34:1-12, Joshua 1:1-4:24, 1 Chronicles 1:1-2:17, 3:1-24, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts 1:1-26, 6:1-8:4
