...................................................................LET US LEARN TOGETHER WHAT IS GOOD. Job 34:4b(NIV)................................................................Some people see the Bible as a long and boring book filled with incidents and events from the lives of ancient people who probably never existed. The biblical stories are seen as fables. Romans 15:4 (KJV) reveals: For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. In this blog, many of the situations and conversations found in the divinely inspired Scriptures of the Holy Bible have been placed in categories that correspond to expressive sayings and phrases. Reference information, background information and links connecting the people and places are given to help you find a place to begin reading the Bible for yourself.

Some Explaining

From a letter written by the apostle Paul (Saul)
to believers in Galatia, years after
in a tomb, resurrected, seen by over 500
people, and returned to heaven:

Tell me, ye that desire to be under the law, do ye not hear the law? For it is written, that Abraham had two sons, the one by a bondmaid, the other by a freewoman. But he who was of the bondwoman was born after the flesh; but he of the freewoman was by promise. Which things are an allegory: for these are the two covenants; the one from the mount Sinai, which gendereth to bondage, which is Agar. For this Agar is mount Sinai in Arabia, and answereth to Jerusalem which now is, and is in bondage with her children. But Jerusalem which is above is free, which is the mother of us all. For it is written, Rejoice, thou barren that bearest not; break forth and cry, thou that travailest not: for the desolate hath many more children than she which hath an husband.-Galatians 4:21-27

Now we, brethren, as Isaac was, are the children of promise. But as then he that was born after the flesh persecuted him that was born after the Spirit, even so it is now. Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman. So then, brethren, we are not children of the bondwoman, but of the free.-Galatians 4:28-31

Roll Call

Ishmael and his descendants

Now these are the generations of Ishmael, Abraham's son, whom Hagar the Egyptian, Sarah's handmaid, bare unto Abraham: And these are the names of the sons of Ishmael, by their names, according to their generations: the firstborn of Ishmael, Nebajoth; and Kedar, and Adbeel, and Mibsam, And Mishma, and Dumah, and Massa, Hadar, and Tema, Jetur, Naphish, and Kedemah: These are the sons of Ishmael, and these are their names,
by their towns, and by their castles; twelve princes according to their nations. And these are the years of the life of Ishmael, an hundred and thirty and seven years: and he gave up the ghost and died; and was gathered unto his people. And they dwelt from Havilah unto Shur, that is before Egypt, as thou goest toward Assyria: and he died in the presence of all his brethren
.-Genesis 25:12-18***Ishmael was born to Abraham (Abram the Hebrew) and maidservant Hagar when Abraham was 86 years old and in a childless marriage to Sarah (Sarai). The divinely inspired Scriptures of the Holy Bible reveal that when Ishmael was in Hagar's womb, and Hagar ran from Abraham and Sarah's home, the angel of the Lord spoke to Hagar. Isaac was born to 100-year-old Abraham and 90-year-old Sarah. Sometime during the celebration held after Isaac was weaned, Sarah noticed Ishmael's behavior and told Abraham to cast Hagar and Ishmael away. The Lord God spoke to Abraham, and Abraham sent Hagar and Ishmael away. After 127-year-old Sarah died, Abraham bought land owned by Ephron the Hittite and buried Sarah's body in the cave on the property. Ephron was descended from Heth, and Heth was born to Canaan, and Canaan was born to Ham, and Ham was born to Noah the ark builder. Abraham and Sarah were descended from Noah's son Shem, and Shem's son Arphaxad, and Arphaxad's great-great-great-great-great-grandson Terah. After 175-year-old Abraham died, Ishmael and Isaac buried Abraham's body in the same cave. Isaac was 40 years old when he was married to Rebekah, Abraham and Sarah's grandniece. Fraternal twin sons Esau (Edom) and Jacob (Israel) were born to 60-year-old Isaac and Rebekah. In Padan Aram, Haran, Jacob was married to Leah and Rachel, the daughters of Rebekah's brother Laban the Syrian (Aramean). Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, and daughter Dinah were born to Jacob and Leah. Dan and Naphtali were born to Jacob and Bilhah, Rachel's maidservant. Gad and Asher were born to Jacob and Zilpah, Leah's maidservant. Joseph  was the 1st son born to Jacob and Rachel. Approximately 1,900 years after Benjamin was born near Bethlehem to Jacob and Rachel, and Rachel died, Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, was born. Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary, a virgin, and Jesus was born in Bethlehem into the tribe of Judah to Mary and her husband Joseph when Mary was a virgin.-Genesis 11:26-50:26, Exodus, Numbers 20:1-29, 27:12-23, Deuteronomy 31:1-30, 32:44-52, 34:1-12, Joshua 1:1-4:24, 1 Chronicles 1:1-2:1-17, 3:1-24, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts 1:1-26

From Where to Where

Now Sarai Abram's wife bare him no children: and she had an handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing: I pray thee, go in unto my maid; it may be that I may obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai. And Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar her maid the Egyptian, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to her husband Abram to be his wife. And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes. And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I have given my maid into thy bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me and thee. But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her as it pleaseth thee. And when Sarai dealt hardly with her, she fled from her face. And the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur. And he said, Hagar, Sarai's maid, whence camest thou? and whither wilt thou go? And she said, I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai. And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands. And the angel of the LORD said unto her, I will multiply thy seed exceedingly, that it shall not be numbered for multitude. And the angel of the LORD said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son, and shalt call his name Ishmael; because the LORD hath heard thy affliction. And he will be a wild man; his hand will be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the presence of all his brethren. And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me? Wherefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered. And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called his son's name, which Hagar bare, Ishmael. And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.-Genesis 16:1-16/the complete chapter***Ishmael was born to 86-year-old Abraham (Abram the Hebrew) and Hagar, the maidservant of Abraham's wife Sarah (Sarai). When Abraham was 99 years old, the Lord God gave Abraham the covenant of circumcision, and Abraham circumcised 13-year-old Ishmael, and Abraham and all of the males on his property were immediately circumcised. Isaac was born to 100-year-old Abraham and 90-year-old Sarah. On the 8th day after Isaac was born, Abraham circumcised Isaac. After Isaac was weaned, and Sarah noticed Ishmael's behavior, Sarah demanded that Abraham cast Hagar and Ishmael away from their property. The divinely inspired Scriptures of the Holy Bible reveal that after the Lord God spoke to Abraham, Abraham sent Hagar and Ismael away. In Beersheba, Hagar cried, and the Lord God heard Ishmael's voice, and the angel of God spoke to Hagar. When Hagar and Ishmael were living in the desert wilderness of Paran, Hagar made marital arrangements for Ishmael, and Ishmael's bride was from Egypt. Sometime after 127-year-old Sarah died, Abraham sent his top servant to Haran, in northern Mesopotamia, to make marital arrangements for Isaac. Abraham's servant prayed to the Lord God, and saw Rebekah, Abraham and Sarah's grandniece. Abraham's servant spoke with Rebekah, and Rebekah rushed home to her family, and Rebekah's brother Laban the Syrian (Aramean) invited Abraham's servant into their home. The marriage was arranged, with Rebekah's consent, and Rebekah became the wife of 40-year-old Isaac. Fraternal twin sons Esau (Edom) and Jacob (Israel) were born to 60-year-old Isaac and Rebekah. Before 127-year-old Abraham died, and Ishmael and Isaac buried Abraham's body in the same cave wherein the body of Sarah was buried, Abraham gave gifts to Ishmael, and to each of the sons born to Abraham and his 2nd wife Keturah, and Abraham gave all that he owned to Isaac. After Jacob deceived Isaac, and cheated Esau, and Rebekah learned that Esau planned to kill Jacob, Rebekah spoke words to Isaac that led him to send Jacob to Rebekah's family and arrange a marriage. In Padan Aram, Haran, Jacob was married to Laban's daughters Leah and Rachel. Levi was the 3rd son born to Jacob and Rachel, and Judah was Jacob and Rachel's 4th born son. Joseph was the 1st son born to Jacob and Rachel. During Jacob's 20th year in Haran, he began journeying home to Canaan with his family, servants, animals, and possessions. Approximately 1,900 years after Benjamin was born near Bethlehem to Jacob and Rachel, and Rachel died, Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, was born. Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary, a virgin, and Jesus was born in Bethlehem into the tribe of Judah to Mary and her husband Joseph when Mary was a virgin.-Genesis 11:26-50:26, Exodus, Numbers 20:1-25:18, 27:12-23, 31:1-54, Deuteronomy 31:1-30, 32:44-52, 34:1-12, Joshua 1:1-4:24, 23:1-24:33, Judges 1:1-8:35, 1 Samuel, 2 Samuel, 1 Kings, 2 Kings, 1 Chronicles 1:1-2:17, 3:1-24, 10:1-29:30, 2 Chronicles, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts 1:1-26

You Handle It

And she called the name of the LORD that spake unto her, Thou God seest me: for she said, Have I also here looked after him that seeth me?-Genesis 16:1-13***Abraham (Abram the Hebrew) and Sarah (Sarai) were living among their family in Ur, in southern Mesopotamia when the Lord God appeared to Abraham and told him to go out from his country and kin and come into the land he would be shown. Abraham and Sarah journeyed away from Ur with their father Terah and nephew Lot and began living in Haran, in northern Mesopotamia. Sometime after 205-year-old Terah died in Haran, 75-year-old Abraham, 65-year-old Sarah, and Lot journeyed with their servants and possessions to Canaan, land inhabited by idolaters that the Lord God promised to give to Abraham's descendants and childless Abraham.  During a famine, Abraham, Sarah and Lot went to Egypt. They returned to Canaan with the servants and animals that Pharaoh, the king of Egypt, gave Abraham. As Abraham and Lot grew wealthier and needed more space, Abraham suggested that they separate, and Lot chose to live near Sodom. Sometime thereafter, Lot and others were captured, and Abraham and his men brought back everyone and everything. When Abraham thought that his servant Eliezer would be his heir, the Lord God assured Abraham that Abraham would have a son to inherit his wealth and Abraham would have descendants too numerous to count, and the Lord God made a covenant with Abraham while Abraham was in a deep sleep. After Sarah made a suggestion, Ishmael was born to 86-year-old Abraham and Hagar, Sarah's Egyptian maidservant. Fourteen years after Ishmael was born, Isaac was born to 100-year-old Abraham and 90-year-old Sarah. When Isaac was 37 years old, Sarah died.  Three years after Sarah's death, 40-year-old Isaac was married to Rebekah, Abraham and Sarah's grandniece. Fraternal twin sons Esau (Edom) and Jacob (Israel) were born to 60-year-old Isaac and Rebekah. Zimran, Jokshan, Medan, Midian, Ishbak, and Shuah were born to Abraham and his 2nd wife Keturah. In Padan Aram, Jacob was married to Leah and Rachel, the daughters of Rebekah's brother Laban the Syrian (Aramean). During Jacob's 20th year in Haran, he began journeying home to Canaan with his family, servants, animals, and possessions. Near Bethlehem, Benjamin was born to Jacob and Rachel, and Rachel died. The 12 sons are the forefathers of the 12 tribes of Israel. Joseph was 17 years old when his brothers sold him to merchants traveling to Egypt and led Jacob to believe that Joseph was killed by a wild beast, and Joseph was 30 years old when Pharaoh proclaimed him second-in-command. Jacob was 130 years old when he moved with his family from Canaan to Egypt. In Egypt, Jacob proclaimed Manasseh and Ephraim, the sons born to Joseph and his wife Asenath, to be his own sons, and the tribe of Joseph became the tribe of Manasseh and the tribe of Ephraim. After 147-year-old Jacob died in Egypt, Jacob's family buried his body in Canaan, in the cave wherein Sarah, Abraham, Rebekah, Isaac, and Leah were buried after they died. Sometime after 110-year-old Joseph and his siblings were dead, the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt. Over 1,400 years after the Lord God sent Moses and Moses' older brother Aaron to speak to the Israelite elders and Pharaoh, Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, was born. Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary, a virgin, and Jesus was born in Bethlehem into the tribe of Judah to Mary and her husband Joseph when Mary was a virgin.-Genesis 11:26-35:29, 1 Chronicles 1:1-3:24, Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Acts 1:1-26

Aw, Paw

The Lord God,
and Abraham, Sarah and Hagar

And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, which she had born unto Abraham, mocking. Wherefore she said unto Abraham, Cast out this bondwoman and her son: for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac. And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight because of his son. And God said unto Abraham, Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah hath said unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall thy seed be called. And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed. And Abraham rose up early in the morning, and took bread, and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away: and she departed, and wandered in the wilderness of Beersheba.-Genesis 21:9-14***Abraham (Abram the Hebrew) and his wife Sarah (Sarai) were living in Ur, in southern Mesopotamia, when the Lord God appeared to Abraham and told Abraham to go out from his country and kin and come into the land he would be shown.
