...................................................................LET US LEARN TOGETHER WHAT IS GOOD. Job 34:4b(NIV)................................................................Some people see the Bible as a long and boring book filled with incidents and events from the lives of ancient people who probably never existed. The biblical stories are seen as fables. Notably, Romans 15:4 reveals: For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope.(KJV) In this blog, many of the situations and conversations found in the divinely inspired Scriptures of the Holy Bible have been placed in categories that correspond to expressive sayings and phrases. Reference information, background information and links connecting the people and places are given to help you find a place to begin reading the Bible for yourself.

The Old and the Bold

Abraham and Lot

And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who dwelt in Sodom, and his goods, and departed. And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram the Hebrew; for he dwelt in the plain of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner: and these were confederate with Abram. And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he armed his trained servants, born in his own house, three hundred and eighteen, and pursued them unto Dan. And he divided himself against them, he and his servants, by night, and smote them unto Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus. And he brought back all the goods, and also brought again his brother Lot, and his goods, and the women also, and the people.

Genesis 14:12-16***Abraham (Abram the Hebrew), his wife Sarah (Sarai), their father Terah, and nephew Lot journeyed from Ur in southern Mesopotamia to Haran in northern Mesopotamia after the Lord God appeared to Abraham and told Abraham to depart from his country and kin and come into the land he would be shown. Sometime after 205-year-old Terah died in Haran, Abraham, Sarah and Lot journeyed with their servants and possessions to Canaan. Amid a famine, Abraham, Sarah and Lot went to Egypt and returned to Canaan. During their journeys, Abraham and Lot grew so wealthy that they were no longer able to inhabit the same area. Thus, at Abraham's suggestion, Abraham and Lot separated, with Lot choosing to go towards the east, near Sodom. Meanwhile, King Bera, ruler of Sodom, and the 4 kings with Bera refused to make any more payments to King Chedorlomer (Kedorlaomer), ruler of Elam. Chedorlomer and the 3 kings with Chedorlomer went on a conquering spree and defeated at least 6 different lands and tribes, including gigantic inhabitants. Bera and his 4 kings went to battle Chedorlomer and his 3 kings. In victory, Chedorlomer and his 3 kings pillaged Sodom and Gomorrah and carried away the inhabitants and goods, including Lot and Lot's possessions. Abraham, who was over 75 years old, went to rescue Lot. Ishmael was born to 96-year old Abraham and Hagar, Sarah's Egyptian maidservant. Isaac was born to 100-year-old Abraham and 90-year-old Sarah. When Isaac was 40 years old, he was married to Rebekah, Abraham and Sarah's grandniece. Fraternal twin sons Esau (Edom) and Jacob (Israel) were born to 60-year-old Isaac and Rebekah. In Padan Aram, Haran, Jacob was married to Leah and Rachel, the daughters of Rebekah's brother Laban the Syrian (Aramean). Levi was the 3rd son born to Jacob and Leah, and Judah was Jacob and Leah's 4th born son. Joseph was the 1st son born to Jacob and Rachel. Approximately 1,900 years after Benjamin was born near Bethlehem to Jacob and Rachel, and Rachel died, Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, was born. Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary, a virgin, and Jesus was born in Bethlehem into the tribe of Judah to Mary and her husband Joseph when Mary was a virgin.
