When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou; And when the LORD thy God shall deliver them before thee; thou shalt smite them, and utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor shew mercy unto them: Neither shalt thou make marriages with them; thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son. And Shechaniah the son of Jehiel, one of the sons of Elam, answered and said unto Ezra, We have trespassed against our God, and have taken strange wives of the people of the land: yet now there is hope in Israel concerning this thing. Now therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all the wives, and such as are born of them, according to the counsel of my lord, and of those that tremble at the commandment of our God; and let it be done according to the law. Arise; for this matter belongeth unto thee: we also will be with thee: be of good courage, and do it.-Ezra 10:1-4

Did not Solomon king of Israel sin by these things? yet among many nations was there no king like him, who was beloved of his God, and God make him king over all Israel: nevertheless even him did outlandish women cause to sin. Shall we then hearken unto  you to do all this great evil, to transgress against our God in marrying strange wives.-Nehemiah 13:23-27

A Prayer Prayed

Nehemiah prays to the Lord God after learning about 

the condition of his fellow Israelites and the state

 of the wall and gates in Jerusalem following the

return of Israelites to Judah and Jerusalem decades

 after the Babylonians invaded Judah, and took many 

Israelites captive, and conquered Jerusalem: 

And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven, And said, I beseech thee, O LORD God of heaven, the great and terrible God, that keepeth covenant and mercy for them that love him and observe his commandments: Let thine ear now be attentive, and thine eyes open, that thou mayest hear the prayer of thy servant, which I pray before thee now, day and night, for the children of Israel thy servants, and confess the sins of the children of Israel, which we have sinned against thee: both I and my father's house have sinned. We have dealt very corruptly against thee, and have not kept the commandments, nor the statutes, nor the judgments, which thou commandedst thy servant Moses. Remember, I beseech thee, the word that thou commandedst thy servant Moses, saying, If ye transgress, I will scatter you abroad among the nations: But if ye turn unto me, and keep my commandments, and do them; though there were of you cast out unto the uttermost part of the heaven, yet will I gather them from thence, and will bring them unto the place that I have chosen to set my name there. Nehemiah, Sanballat, Tobiah, and those with them:

But it came to pass, that when Sanballat heard that we builded the wall, he was wroth, and took great indignation, and mocked the Jews. And he spake before his brethren and the army of Samaria, and said, What do these feeble Jews? will they fortify themselves? will they sacrifice? will they make an end in a day? will they revive the stones out of the heaps of the rubbish which are burned? Now Tobiah the Ammonite was by him, and he said, Even that which they build, if a fox go up, he shall even break down their stone wall. Hear, O our God; for we are despised: and turn their reproach upon their own head, and give them for a prey in the land of captivity: And cover not their iniquity, and let not their sin be blotted out from before thee: for they have provoked thee to anger before the builders. So built we the wall; and the wall was joined together unto the half thereof: for the people had a mind to work. But it came to pass, that when Sanballat, and Tobiah, and the Arabians, and the Ammonites, and the Ashdodites, heard that the walls of Jerusalem were made up, and that the breaches began to be stopped, then they were very wroth, And conspired all of them together to come and to fight against Jerusalem, and to hinder it. Jehoiachin (Jeconiah/Coniah), the son born to Jehoiakim and Nehushta, was the 18th king to rule Judah. During Jehoiachin's 3-month reign, the Babylonians took more prominent Israelites, including Jehoiachin, his wives and mothers, to Babylon. During the 11th year of the reign of Jehoiakim's brother King Zedekiah (Mattaniah), the 19th king to rule Judah, the Babylonians conquered Jerusalem, according to the will of the Lord God, due to the idolatry and other wickedness of the Israelites. Moreover, the Babylonians took more Israelites captive, including Zedekiah, and burned the temple and other buildings. After King Cyrus, ruler of the Persian Empire, conquered Babylon, Cyrus proclaimed that Israelites living throughout the empire could return to Jerusalem and build a temple. Seven months after returning to Jerusalem, the Israelites built an altar and sacrificed burnt offerings to the Lord God. During the 2nd year of their return to Jerusalem, the Israelites completed the foundation of the temple. However, enemies of the Israelites successfully worked against the building efforts. Another group of enemies sent an instigative letter to King Artaxerxes, the reigning ruler of the Persian Empire. Artaxerxes replied that the Israelites be commanded to stop building. Years thereafter, different enemies sent an instigative letter to King Darius during his reign over the Persian Empire. Darius commanded that a search be conducted and that the enemies responsible for writing and sending the letter supply the Israelites with specific items. Thus, the Israelites finished building the temple. Nehemiah was an Israelite living in the Persian Empire and working as a cupbearer for Artaxerxes. After Nehemiah received information about Jerusalem and the Israelites, Nehemiah cried, mourned, fasted, and Nehamiah prayed to the Lord God. After answering Artaxerxes, and praying to the Lord God, and making a request of Artaxerxes, Nehemiah was given permission, and the accompaniment of a military unit, to go to Jerusalem and build. The divinely inspired Scriptures of the Holy Bible reveal that 52 days after beginning their project, the Israelites finished building the gates and wall around Jerusalem, despite the attempts of several enemies. Over 400 years after Nehemiah began serving as governor while in Judah, Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, was born. King Artaxerxes and Nehemiah:

And it came to pass in the month Nisan, in the twentieth year of Artaxerxes the king, that wine was before him: and I took up the wine, and gave it unto the king. Now I had not been beforetime sad in his presence. Wherefore the king said unto me, Why is thy countenance sad, seeing thou art not sick? this is nothing else but sorrow of heart. Then I was very sore afraid, And said unto the king, Let the king live for ever: why should not my countenance be sad, when the city, the place of my fathers' sepulchres, lieth waste, and the gates thereof are consumed with fire? Then the king said unto me, For what dost thou make request? So I prayed to the God of heaven. And I said unto the king, If it please the king, and if thy servant have found favour in thy sight, that thou wouldest send me unto Judah, unto the city of my fathers' sepulchres, that I may build it. And the king said unto me, (the queen also sitting by him,) For how long shall thy journey be? and when wilt thou return? So it pleased the king to send me, and I set him a time. Moreover I said unto the king, If it please the king, let letters be given me to the governors beyond the river, that they may convey me over till I come into Judah; And a letter unto Asaph the keeper of the king's forest, that he may give me timber to make beams for the gates of the palace which appertained to the house, and for the wall of the city, and for the house that I shall enter into. And the king granted me, according to the good hand of my God upon me. Then I came to the governors beyond the river, and gave them the king's letters. Now the king had sent captains of the army and horsemen with me. When Sanballat the Horonite, and Tobiah the servant, the Ammonite, heard of it, it grieved them exceedingly that there was come a man to seek the welfare of the children of Israel.-Nehemiah 2:1-10***Joshua was an Israelite from the tribe of Ephraim, descended from Abraham (Abram the Hebrew) and Sarah (Sarai), Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob (Israel) and his 2nd wife Rachel, their firstborn son Joseph and his wife Asenath, and Joseph and Asenath's 2nd born son Ephraim, whom Jacob proclaimed to be his own son. Over 400 years after Joshua led the Israelites across the divinely parted Jordan River and onto the Promised Land, Solomon, the 2nd child born to King David and Bathsheba, became the 3rd king to rule over all of the Israelites. Rehoboam, the son born to Solomon and Naamah, was the 4th king to rule over all of the Israelites in the Promised Land, the land that the Lord God promised to give to Abraham, and Isaac, and to Jacob, and their descendants. After Rehoboam gave a specific answer, the Israelites split into 2 kingdoms, according to the will of the Lord God, due to the idolatry and other wickedness of Solomon. Judah was the nation in the south, Jerusalem was the royal city, and Rehoboam was the 1st king to reign. Israel was the northern nation, Samaria was the final royal city, and Jeroboam, the son born to Nebat and Zeruah, was the 1st king to reign. King Pekah was the 18th king to rule over all of the Israelites in the northern nation of Israel. During Pekah's 20-year reign, the Assyrians invaded the kingdom and King Tiglath-pileser, ruler of Assyria, began taking Israelites captive. During the 11th year of the reign of King Hoshea, the 19th king to rule the northern nation, the Assyrians conquered Samaria, according to the will of the Lord God, due to to the idolatry and other wickedness of the Israelites. Less than 125 years after Samaria was conquered, Rehoboam's great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandson Jehoiakim (Eliakim) became the 17th king to rule Judah. During Jehoiakim's 11-year reign, the Babylonians (Chaldeans) invaded Judah and Jerusalem and King Nebuchadnezzar, ruler of Babylon, began looting the temple of the Lord. Jehoiachin (Jeconiah/Coniah), the son born to Jehoiakim and Nehushta, was the 18th king to rule Judah. Decades thereafter, King Artaxerxes was ruling the Persian Empire. Nehemiah, an Israelite, was the cupbearer for Artaxerxes. After Nehemiah learned about the circumstances in Jerusalem, and the state of the wall and gates, Nehemiah cried, and was mournful, and fasted, and prayed to the Lord God. Artaxerxes questioned Nehemiah and allowed Nehemiah to go to Jerusalem. In Jerusalem, despite enemy conspiracies, Nehemiah led the Israelites to a 52-day wall building accomplishment, and Nehemiah served 12 years as governor in Jerusalem. Over 400 years after the wall and temple were built, Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, was born. Jesus was conceived of the Holy Spirit in the womb of Mary, a virgin, and Jesus was born in Bethlehem, approximately 6 miles from Jerusalem, into tribe of Judah, the tribe of Judah's kings, to Mary and her husband Joseph when Mary was a virgin. Events that occurred among the Israelites
when the wall around Jerusalem was rebuilt,
over 100 years after the final Babylonian invasion:

And all the people gathered themselves together as one man into the street that was before the water gate; and they spake unto Ezra the scribe to bring the book of the law of Moses, which the LORD had commanded to Israel. And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month. And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law. And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam. And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up: And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. And all the people answered, Amen, Amen, with lifting up their hands: and they bowed their heads, and worshipped the LORD with their faces to the ground.-Nehemiah 8:1-6 

Also Jeshua, and Bani, and Sherebiah, Jamin, Akkub, Shabbethai, Hodijah, Maaseiah, Kelita, Azariah, Jozabad, Hanan, Pelaiah, and the Levites, caused the people to understand the law: and the people stood in their place.-Nehemiah 8:7

                                          

So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading. And Nehemiah, which is the Tirshatha, and Ezra the priest the scribe, and the Levites that taught the people, said unto all the people, This day is holy unto the LORD your God; mourn not, nor weep. For all the people wept, when they heard the words of the law.-Nehemiah 8:8-9

Then he said unto them, Go you way, eat the fat, and drink the sweet, and send portions unto them for whom nothing is prepared: for this day is holy unto our LORD: neither be ye sorry; for the joy of the LORD is your strength. So the Levites stilled all the people, saying, Hold your peace, for the day is holy; neither be ye grieved. And all the people went their way to eat, and to drink, and to send portions, and to make great mirth, because they had understood the words that were declared unto them. And on the second day were gathered together the chief of the fathers of all the people, the priests, and the Levites, unto Ezra the scribe, even to understand the words of the law.-Nehemiah 8:10-13

And they found written in the law which the LORD had commanded by Moses, that the children of Israel should dwell in booths in the feast of the seventh month: And that they should publish and proclaim in all their cities, and in Jerusalem, saying, Go forth unto the mount, and fetch olive branches, and pine branches, and myrtle branches, and palm branches, and branches of thick trees, to make booths, as it is written. So the people went forth, and brought them, and made themselves booths, every one upon the roof of his house, and in their courts, and in the courts of the house of God, and in the street of the water gate, and in the street of the gate of Ephraim. And all the congregation of them that were come again out of the captivity made booths, and sat under the booths: for since the days of Jeshua the son of Nun unto that day had not the children of Israel done so. And there was very great gladness. Also day by day, from the first day unto the last day, he read in the book of the law of God. And they kept the feast seven days; and on the eighth day was a solemn assembly, according unto the manner.-Nehemiah 8:14-18

When Moses was 80 years old and Aaron was 83, the Lord God sent them to speak to the Israelite elders and Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. After the Lord God brought the 10th and final plague upon Pharaoh and Egypt, Moses and Aaron led the Israelites, and those with them, away from Egypt, across the divinely parted Red Sea, and into the desert wilderness of Shur. In Rephidim, Moses told Joshua to select men to fight alongside him in a battle against the Amalekites, and in the desert wilderness of Sinai, when Moses was upon Mount Sinai 40 days and nights with the Lord God, Joshua was upon the mountain. Moreover, Joshua was Moses' aide. In the desert wilderness of Paran, Joshua and Caleb were the only spies who spoke of victory after returning from a mission to Canaan, the Promised Land. During the 40-year journey to Canaan, Miriam the prophetess died and was buried in Kadesh, in the desert wilderness of Zin. Upon Mount Hor, 123-year-old Aaron the high priest died. Upon Mount Abiram, Joshua officially became Moses' successor, according to the command of the Lord God. Near the Promised Land, the Lord God spoke to Moses and Joshua, and Moses taught the Israelites a song, with Joshua. When Moses went upon Mount Nebo, the Lord God showed Moses the Promised Land, and 120-year-old Moses the prophet died, and was divinely buried. After the Lord God spoke to him, Joshua led the Israelites across the divinely parted Jordan River and onto the land that the Lord God promised to give to Abraham, and Isaac, and to Jacob, and their descendants. Meanwhile, idolaters were living throughout Canaan. Ashdod was a Philistine city in the portion of the Promised Land allotted to the tribe of Jacob and Leah's 4th born son Judah. The divinely inspired Scriptures of the Holy Bible reveal that the tribe of Judah was not able to completely expel the idolaters, including the Philistines and several gigantic Anakim living in Ashdod. After 110-year-old Joshua died, and was buried in his tribe's portion of the Promised Land, and the elders of Joshua's generation were dead, the Israelites began worshiping the idols worshiped by the idolaters, and some Israelites were married to idolaters. Saul, from the tribe of Jacob and Rachel's 2nd and last son Benjamin, was the 1st king to rule over the Israelites in the Promised Land. And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon the first day of the seventh month. And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law. And Ezra the scribe stood upon a pulpit of wood, which they had made for the purpose; and beside him stood Mattithiah, and Shema, and Anaiah, and Urijah, and Hilkiah, and Maaseiah, on his right hand; and on his left hand, Pedaiah, and Mishael, and Malchiah, and Hashum, and Hashbadana, Zechariah, and Meshullam. And Ezra opened the book in the sight of all the people; (for he was above all the people;) and when he opened it, all the people stood up: And Ezra blessed the LORD, the great God. When Moses was upon Mount Sinai 40 days and nights with the Lord God, the Lord God described to Moses the offering that willing Israelites were to bring, and the Lord God described to Moses and showed him the likeness of the tabernacle, and the ark of the covenant of the Lord, and the other sacred items that the Israelites were to make, and the Lord God told Moses that only Aaron, and Aaron's sons, and the sons born to their descendants were to serve the Lord God as priests. Meanwhile, the Israelites thought they were abandoned and told Aaron to make gods to lead them. Aaron told the Israelites to bring him their gold earrings, and Aaron made a golden calf that the Israelites worshiped and Moses burned and ground. When King Artaxerxes ruled the Persian Empire, Nehemiah, an Israelite, was the king's cupbearer. After Nehemiah learned that Jerusalem was not enclosed behind a wall and was vulnerable to attacks, he prayed to the Lord God, and spoke to Artaxerxes, and received permission and assistance from Artaxerxes to journey to Jerusalem. The divinely inspired Scriptures of the Holy Bible reveal that Aaron's descendant Ezra, a priest and scribe, was with Nehemiah in Jerusalem. After a wall was built around Jerusalem, Ezra stood upon a specially built wooden platform and loudly read the Book of the Law. Over 400 years after the new temple was built, Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, was born.
