In Jerusalem, the rebuilding of the wall and gates
Then Eliashib the high priest rose up with his brethren the priests, and they builded the sheep gate; they sanctified it, and set up the doors of it; even unto the tower of Meah they sanctified it, unto the tower of Hananeel. And next unto him builded the men of Jericho. And next to them builded Zaccur the son of Imri. But the fish gate did the sons of Hassenaah build, who also laid the beams thereof, and set up the doors thereof, the locks thereof, and the bars thereof. And next unto them repaired Meremoth the son of Urijah, the son of Koz. And next unto them repaired Meshullam the son of Berechiah, the son of Meshezabeel. And next unto them repaired Zadok the son of Baana. And next unto them the Tekoites repaired; but their nobles put not their necks to the work of their Lord. Moreover the old gate repaired Jehoiada the son of Paseah, and Meshullam the son of Besodeiah; they laid the beams thereof, and set up the doors thereof, and the locks thereof, and the bars thereof. And next unto them repaired Melatiah the Gibeonite, and Jadon the Meronothite, the men of Gibeon, and of Mizpah, unto the throne of the governor on this side the river. Next unto him repaired Uzziel the son of Harhaiah, of the goldsmiths. Next unto him also repaired Hananiah the son of one of the apothecaries, and they fortified Jerusalem unto the broad wall. And next unto them repaired Rephaiah the son of Hur, the ruler of the half part of Jerusalem. And next unto them repaired Jedaiah the son of Harumaph, even over against his house. And next unto him repaired Hattush the son of Hashabniah. Malchijah the son of Harim, and Hashub the son of Pahath-moab, repaired the other piece, and the tower of the furnaces. And next unto him repaired Shallum the son of Halohesh, the ruler of the half part of Jerusalem, he and his daughters.-Nehemiah 3:1-12***Amram and Jochebed were Israelites from the tribe of Levi, descended from Abraham (Abram the Hebrew) and Sarah (Sarai), Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob (Israel) and his 1st wife Leah, and Jacob and Leah's 3rd born son Levi. Miriam and Aaron were born to Amram and Jochebed before another son was born to them. When the newborn son was 3 months old, Jochebed placed the infant in a specially prepared ark, and set the ark among the vegetation on the banks of the river, the result of Amram and Jochebed's plan to keep their baby boy safe from the murderous intentions of Pharaoh, the king of Egypt. Pharaoh's daughter saw the ark, and commanded that the ark be brought to her. Miriam spoke to Pharaoh's daughter and arranged for Jochebed to serve as the wet nurse for the baby. After Moses was weaned, Jochebed took Moses to Pharaoh's daughter, and Pharaoh's daughter named the child Moses, and Moses lived as the son of Pharaoh's daughter. When Moses was 40 years old, he murdered an Egyptian, and the murder was mentioned to Moses, and Pharaoh wanted to kill Moses, and Moses bolted from Egypt and began living in Midian, and was married to Zipporah, a Midianite woman. The Midianites descended from Abraham and his 2nd wife Keturah, and their son Midian. In Midian, Gershom and Eliezer were born to Moses and Zipporah. When Moses was 80 years old, he saw a fiery sight, and the Lord God spoke to Moses, and Moses had a conversation with the Lord God, and the Lord God sent Moses and 83-year-old Aaron to speak to the Israelite elders and Pharaoh. After the Lord God brought the 10th and final plague upon Pharaoh and Egypt, Moses and Aaron led the Israelites, and those with them, away from Egyptian slavery, across the divinely parted Red Sea, and into the desert wilderness of Shur. In the desert wilderness of Sinai, in the region of Mount Sinai, the Israelites heard the voice of the Lord God proclaim the Ten Commandments to them, and the Lord God began giving Moses judgments, statues, and laws for the Israelites, and the Lord God made a covenant with the Israelites. During the 40-year journey to Canaan, the Promised Land, Miriam the prophetess died and was buried in Kadesh, in the desert wilderness of Zin. Upon Mount Hor, 123-year-old Aaron the high priest died, and Eleazar, the son born to Aaron and Elisheba, became the high priest. When Moses went upon Mount Nebo, the Lord God showed Moses the Promised Land, and 120-year-old Moses the prophet died, and was divinely buried. Joshua, Moses' aide and successor from the tribe of Ephraim, led the Israelites across the divinely parted Jordan River and onto the land that the Lord God promised to give to Abraham, and Isaac, and to Jacob, and their descendants. Sometime thereafter, Joshua, and Eleazar, and the tribal leaders specified by the Lord God allotted each tribe their portion of the Promised Land, according to the commands that the Lord God gave Moses. Over 400 years after 110-year-old Joshua died, and was buried in his tribe's portion of the Promised Land, Rehoboam, the son born to King Solomon and Naamah, became the 4th king to rule over all of the Israelites. After Rehoboam gave a specific answer, the Israelites split into 2 kingdoms, according to the will of the Lord God, due to the idolatry and other wickedness of Solomon. Judah was the nation in the south, Jerusalem was the royal city, and Rehoboam was the 1st king to reign. Israel was the northern nation, Samaria was the final royal city, and Jeroboam, the son born to Nebat and Zeruah, was the 1st king to reign. King Pekah was the 18th king to rule over all of the Israelites in the northern nation of Israel. During Pekah's 20-year reign, the Assyrians invaded the kingdom and King Tiglath-pileser, ruler of Assyria, began taking Israelites captive. During the 9th year of the reign of King Hoshea, the 19th king to rule the northern nation, the Assyrians conquered Samaria, according to the will of the Lord God, due to the idolatry and other wickedness of the Israelites. Less than 140 years after Samaria was conquered, Rehoboam's great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandson Jehoiakim (Eliakim) became the 17th king to rule Judah. During Jehoiakim's 11-year reign, the Babylonians (Chaldeans) invaded Judah and Jerusalem and King Nebuchadnezzar, ruler of Babylon, began looting the temple of the Lord. Jehoiachin (Jeconiah/Coniah), the son born to Jehoiakim and Nehustha, was the 18th king to rule Judah. During Jehoiachin's 3-month reign, the Babylonians took more prominent Israelites, including Jehoiachin, his wives and mother, to Babylon. During the 11th year of the reign of Jehoiakim's brother Zedekiah (Mattaniah), the 19th king to rule Judah, the Babylonians conquered Jerusalem, according to the will of the Lord God, due to the idolatry and other wickedness of the Israelites. Moreover, the Babylonians destroyed the walls around Jerusalem and burned the temple and other buildings. Over 70 years after King Cyrus, ruler of the Persian Empire, allowed Israelites to return to Judah and Jerusalem, Nehemiah learned that although the Israelites built a temple, the walls around Jerusalem were not rebuilt. Nehemiah prayed to the Lord God, and Nehemiah asked King Artaxerxes for permission to go to Jerusalem. Artaxerxes gave Nehemiah permission and the letters necessary to help Nehemiah. After Nehemiah revealed his mission to the Israelites in Jerusalem, the rebuilding of the wall and gates began, with the daughters of Shallum, an Israelite official, helping to build alongside their father. Over 400 years after the wall was constructed and the gates were in place, Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, was born.
