rule over all of the Israelites in the Promised Land:

And David reigned over all Israel; and David executed judgment and justice unto all his people. And Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the host; and Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder; And Zadok the son of Ahitub, and Ahimelech the son of Abiathar, were the priests; and Seraiah was the scribe; And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over both the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and David's sons were chief rulers.-2 Samuel 8:15-18

All these were the rulers of the substance which was king David's. Also Jonathan David's uncle was a counseller, a wise man, and a scribe: and Jehiel the son of Hachmoni was with the king's sons: And Ahithophel was the king's counseller: and Hushai the Archite was the king's companion: And after Ahithophel was Jehoiada the son of Benaiah, and Abiathar: and the general of the king's army was Joab.-1 Chronicles 27:25-34

Sounds Like a Plan

Absalom and Hushai

Then said Absalom, Call now Hushai the Archite also, and let us hear likewise what he saith. And when Hushai was come to Absalom, Absalom spake unto him, saying, Ahithophel hath spoken after this manner: shall we do after his saying? if not; speak thou. And Hushai said unto Absalom, The counsel that Ahithophel hath given is not good at this time. For, said Hushai, thou knowest thy father and his men, that they be mighty men, and they be chafed in their minds, as a bear robbed of her whelps in the field: and thy father is a man of war, and will not lodge with the people. Behold, he is hid now in some pit, or in some other place: and it will come to pass, when some of them be overthrown at the first, that whosoever heareth it will say, There is a slaughter among the people that follow Absalom. And he also that is valiant, whose heart is as the heart of a lion, shall utterly melt: for all Israel knoweth that thy father is a mighty man, and they which be with him are valiant men. Therefore I counsel that all Israel be generally gathered unto thee, from Dan even to Beersheba, as the sand that is by the sea for multitude; and that thou go to battle in thine own person. So shall we come upon him in some place where he shall be found, and we will light upon him as the dew falleth on the ground: and of him and of all the men that are with him there shall not be left so much as one. Moreover, if he be gotten into a city, then shall all Israel bring ropes to that city, and we will draw it into the river, until there be not one small stone found there. And Absalom and all the men of Israel said, The counsel of Hushai the Archite is better than the counsel of Ahithophel. For the LORD had appointed to defeat the good counsel of Ahithophel, to the intent that the LORD might bring evil upon Absalom.-2 Samuel 17:5-14***King David was the 2nd king to rule over all of the Israelites in the Promised Land, the land that the Lord God promised to give to Abraham (Abram the Hebrew), and to Abraham's son Isaac, and to Isaac's youngest fraternal twin son Jacob (Israel), and to their descendants. David had many wives, concubines and children. Amnon, the son born to David and Ahinoam, raped Tamar, the daughter born to David and Maacah (Maachah), a Syrian (Aramean) princess from Geshur. Two years thereafter, David and Maacah's son Absalom commanded Amnon's death, and Amnon was killed, and Absalom escaped to Geshur. Joab, David's nephew and army commander,  succeeded with a plan that resulted in David sending him to Geshur and bringing Absalom home to Jerusalem, the royal city. However, according to David's words to Joab, Absalom was not brought to David. Two years after Absalom's return, Absalom put forth plans  that involved Joab and Joab's land, and Absalom was finally brought to David, and David kissed Absalom. In Jerusalem, Absalom worked to take the kingship during David's reign. While Absalom was being proclaimed king, David and those loyal to David began leaving Jerusalem. David's advisor Ahithophel joined Absalom. After David learned of Ahithophel's betrayal, David prayed a specific request to the Lord God about the advice Ahithophel would offer Absalom. Hushai, David's friend, followed David's instructions and went to Absalom, pretending to be on Absalom's side. Hushai led Absalom to choose his plan, and was able to relay an important message to David through Zadok the priest, and Zadok's son Ahimaaz, and Abiathar the priest, and Abiathar's son Jonathan. Zadok remained on David's side for the rest of David's life. Adonijah was the son born to David and Haggith. When David was approximately 70 years old and still reigning, Abiathar and Joab joined Adonijah, who worked to proclaim himself king. Over 900 years after Solomon, a son born to David and Bathsheba, became the 3rd king to rule over all of the Israelites, Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, was born. The divinely inspired Scriptures of the Holy Bible reveal that David went from being a shepherd, to being anointed to reign as king, to working as a musician and an armor-bearer for King Saul, the reigning ruler, to being the slayer of Goliath the gigantic Philistine, to being captain over 1,000 soldiers, to being married to Saul's daughter Michal, to being on the run from Saul, to being the leader of approximately 400 men, to becoming the husband of Abigail and Ahinoam, to living in Ziklag among the Philistines with his wives, and his men and their families, to being king only over the tribe of Judah after Saul's self-inflicted death on the battlefield, to being king over all of the Israelite tribes sometime after the death of Saul's son Ishbosheth (Eshbaal). Absalom was the son born to David and Maacah. Ahithophel eventually left David and joined Absalom when Absalom had himself proclaimed king while David reigned. David prayed and made a request to the Lord God. Meanwhile, David's adviser Ahithophel advised Absalom regarding David's concubines. Ahithophel wanted to be allowed to put together a huge troop and kill David. When David was old and still reigning, Adonijah, the son born to David and Haggith, worked to proclaim himself king, and Abiathar and Joab left David and went to Adonijah. You Know You Know Them, Right

Absalom, Hushai and Ahithophel

The Lord God showed Moses the Promised Land, and 120-year-old Moses the prophet died, and was divinely buried. Joshua, Moses' aide and successor, was from the tribe of Ephraim, descended from Abraham (Abram the Hebrew) and Sarah (Sarai), Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob (Israel) and his 2nd wife Rachel, their firstborn son Joseph and his wife Asenath, and Joseph and Asenath's 2nd born son Ephraim, whom Jacob proclaimed to be his own son. After the Lord God spoke to Joshua, and Joshua sent 2 spies to Canaan, and Rahab hid the spies, and the spies returned, Joshua led the Israelites across the divinely parted Jordan River and onto the land that the Lord God promised to give to Abraham, and Isaac, and to Jacob, and their descendants. After 110-year-old Joshua died, and was buried in his tribe's portion of the Promised Land, the Israelites were led by elders, judges and their own minds. Samuel the priest, prophet and judge was from the tribe of Levi, the birth tribe of Aaron and Moses, descended from Jacob and his 1st wife Leah and their 3rd born son Levi. When Samuel was elderly, and his sons Joel (Vashni) and Abiah (Abijah) were not obeying the commands of the Lord God, and King Nahash and his Ammonite army were preparing to attack, the Israelite elders demanded that Samuel appoint a king to lead them, and Samuel anointed Saul, from the tribe of Jacob and Rachel's 2nd and last son Benjamin, to reign, according to the command of the Lord God. At Gibeah of God (the hill of God), the Spirit of God came upon Saul. At least twice, Saul did not obey the commands of the Lord God. Samuel told Saul that the Lord God rejected Saul from being king and had torn the kingdom from Saul. David was from the tribe of Jacob and Leah's 4th born son Judah and was a man after God's own heart. The divinely inspired Scriptures of the Holy Bible reveal that the Lord God sent Samuel to Bethlehem to anoint David to reign as king, and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David, and the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul. After Saul heard about David's skills, strength, appearance, and favor with the Lord God, he commanded that David's father Jesse send David to him, and David began serving as a musician and an armor-bearer for Saul. Amid the Valley of Elah, David killed and beheaded Goliath the gigantic  Philistine. David and Jonathan, Saul's son, made a covenant. The Israelite women sang of David higher than they sang of Saul, and Saul was angry. Saul wanted to kill David, and became afraid of David, and sent David on missions to get killed, and commanded others, including Jonathan, to kill David. Saul's daughter Michal was married to David and helped David escape from their home. After the Philistines killed Jonathan and his brothers Malchishua and Abinadab (Ishui?), and Saul's self-inflicted death on the same battlefield, men from the tribe of Judah anointed 30-year-old, and David began to reign only over the tribe of Judah. Saul's son Ishbosheth (Eshbaal) ruled over the other Israelite tribes. Sometime after Ishbosheth was murdered, the Israelite elders went to David, and David made a covenant with them. The elders anointed 37-year-old David, and David began to rule over all of the Israelites. Hushai, David's friend, showed his support for David after Absalom, the son born to David and Maacah, had himself proclaimed king while David reigned. Meanwhile, Ahithophel, David's counselor, began advising  Absalom. David prayed to the Lord God and asked that Ahithophel's advice be made into nonsense. Moreover, David told Hushai to feign allegiance to Absalom. Ahithophel advised Absalom to engage in intimacy with David's concubines, and told Absalom to select 12,000 men and pursue and kill David. Although Absalom and the elders liked Ahithophel's plan, Absalom also wanted to hear from Hushai.  Adonijah was the son born to David and Haggith. After Adonijah worked to have himself proclaimed king while David reigned, David proclaimed that Solomon was to be king. Solomon was a son born to David and Bathsheba. Some biblical scholars think that Ahithophel was possibly Bathsheba's grandfather inasmuch as Bathsheba's father was named Eliam and Eliam's father was named Ahithophel. Over 900 years after Rehoboam, the son born to Solomon and Naamah, became the 4th king to rule over all of the Israelites, Jesus the Christ, the  Son of God, was born.
