Abishai and Benaiah

And Abishai the brother of Joab, he was chief of the three; for lifting up his spear against three hundred, he slew them, and had a name among the three. Of the three, he was more honourable than the two; for he was their captain: howbeit he attained not to the first three. Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man of Kabzeel, who had done many acts; he slew two lionlike men of Moab: also he went down and slew a lion in a pit in a snowy day. And he slew an Egyptian, a man of great stature, five cubits high; and in the Egyptian's hand was a spear like a weaver's beam; and he went down to him with a staff, and plucked the spear out of the Egyptian's hand, and slew him with his own spear. These things did Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, and had the name among the three mighties. Behold, he was honourable among the thirty, but attained not to the first three: and David set him over his guard.-1 Chronicles 11:20-25***Forty years after Moses and his older brother Aaron led their fellow Israelites away from Egyptian slavery, across the divinely parted Red Sea, into the desert wilderness of Shur, and the desert wilderness of Sin, and the desert wilderness of Sinai,  123-year-old Aaron the high priest died upon Mount Hor, and Moses went Mount Nebo. The Lord God showed Moses the Promised Land, and 120-year-old Moses the prophet died, and was divinely buried. Joshua was Moses' aide and successor from the tribe of Ephraim, descended from Abraham (Abram the Hebrew) and Sarah (Sarai), Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob (Israel) and his 2nd wife Rachel, their firstborn son Joseph and his wife Asenath, and Joseph and Asenath's 2nd born son Ephraim, whom Jacob proclaimed to be his own son. The Lord God spoke to Joshua, and Joshua sent 2 spies to Canaan, the Promised Land, and Rahab hid the spies, and the spies returned, and Joshua led the Israelites across the divinely parted Jordan River and onto the land that the Lord God promised to give to Abraham, and Isaac, and to Jacob, and their descendants. After 110-year-old Joshua died, and was buried in his tribe's portion of the Promised Land, the Israelites were led by elders, judges and their own minds. Samuel the priest, prophet and judge was from the tribe of Levi, the birth tribe of Aaron and Moses, descended from Jacob and his 1st wife Leah and their 3rd born son Levi. Aaron and Moses w The Moabites and Ammonites descended from Abraham and Sarah's nephew Lot and Lot's oldest daughter and their son Moab. When Samuel was elderly, and his sons Joel (Vashni) and Abiah (Abijah) were not obeying the commands of the Lord God, and King Nahash and his Ammonite army were preparing to attack, the Israelite elders demanded that Samuel appoint a king to lead them, and Samuel anointed Saul, from the tribe of Jacob and Rachel's 2nd and last son Benjamin, to reign, according to the command of the Lord God. At Gibeah of God (the hill of God), the Spirit of God came upon Saul. At least twice, Saul did not obey the commands of the Lord God. Samuel told Saul that the Lord God rejected Saul from being king and had torn the kingdom from Saul. David was from the tribe of Jacob and Leah's 4th born son Judah, and lived in Bethlehem, and was a man after God's own heart.  While Saul reigned, the Lord God sent Samuel to anoint David to reign as king, and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David, and the Spirit of the Lord departed from Saul. The divinely inspired Scriptures of the Holy Bible reveal that David's paternal great-grandmother Ruth was a Moabite. After Saul heard about David's skills, strength, appearance, and favor with the Lord God, he commanded that David's father Jesse send David to him, and David began serving as a musician and an armor-bearer for Saul. Amid the Valley of Elah, David killed and beheaded Goliath the gigantic Philistine from Gath. David and Jonathan, Saul's son, made a a covenant. The Israelite women sang of David higher than they sang of Saul, and Saul was angry. Saul wanted to kill David, and became afraid of David, and sent David on missions to get killed, and commanded others, including Jonathan, to kill David. Saul's daughter Michal was married to David and helped David escape from their home. David's nephew Abishai, and most certainly Abishai's brothers Joab and Asahel, were with David in the wilderness and woods. At the Adullam cave, approximately 400 distressed, discontented, and indebted men joined David, and David took his mother and his father Jesse to live under the care of the Moabite king. Before David and the men with him went to battle the Philistines in Keilah, the men told David that they were afraid. David and his men defeated the Philistines, according to the will of the Lord God, and more men, including warriors, joined David, and David and his men became known as mighty warriors. Meanwhile, David was married to Abigail and Ahinoam, and Michal was married to Palti (Phalti/Paltiel/Phaltiel). Ziklag was a city in the portion of land allotted to the tribe of Jacob and Leah's 2nd born son Simeon, and was under the control of the Philistines. King Achish, the Philistine ruler of Gath, gave Ziklag to David, and warriors from the tribe of Benjamin went to Ziklag and united with David. Jashobeam (Josheb-basshebeth), Eleazar and Shammah were even more distinguished among all of David's men and were known as "the first three, the three mighty men, the three mighties." After the Philistines killed Jonathan and his brothers Malchishua and Abinadab (Ishui?), and Saul's self-inflicted death on the same battlefield, men from the tribe of Judah anointed 30-year-old David, and David began to reign only over the tribe of Judah. Saul's relative and army commander Abner placed Saul's son Ishbosheth (Eshbaal) as king over the other Israelite tribes. Sometime after Ishbosheth was murdered, the Israelite elders went to David and David made a covenant with them. The elders anointed 37-year-old David, and David began to rule over all of the Israelites. After a disagreement between Abner and Ishbosheth, Abner wanted to join David, and David required that Michal be brought to him. At least 950 years after Solomon, a son born to David and his wife Bathsheba, became the 3rd king to rule over all of the Israelites, and 70-year-old David died, Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, was born. Moreover Abishai the son of Zeruiah slew of the Edomites in the valley of salt eighteen thousand.-1 Chronicles 18:12...And Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and the sons of David were chief about the king.-1 Chronicles 18:17

The third captain of the host for the third month was Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, a chief priest: and in his course were twenty and four thousand. This is that Benaiah, who was mighty among the thirty: and in his course was Ammizabad his son.-1 Chronicles 27:5-6

There Was a Whole Lot of Killing Going On

Incidents between King David and:

Now after this it came to pass, that David smote the Philistines, and subdued them, and took Gath and her towns out of the hand of the Philistines. And he smote Moab; and the Moabites became David's servants, and brought gifts. And David smote Hadarezer king of Zobah unto Hamath, as he went to stablish his dominion by the river Euphrates. And David took from him a thousand chariots, and seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen: David also houghed all the chariot horses, but reserved of them an hundred chariots. And when the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadarezer king of Zobah, David slew of the Syrians two and twenty thousand men. And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadarezer, and brought them to Jerusalem. Now when Tou king of Hamath heard how David had smitten all the host of Hadarezer king of Zobah; He sent Hadoram his son to king David, to inquire of his welfare, and to congratulate him, because he had fought against Hadarezer, and smitten him; (for Hadarezer had war with Tou;) and with him all manner of vessels of gold and silver and brass. Them also king David dedicated unto the LORD, with the silver and the gold that he brought from all these nations; from Edom, and from Moab, and from the children of Ammon, and from the Philistines, and from Amalek. And there went out after him Joab's men, and the Cherethites, and the Pelethites, and all the mighty men: and they went out of Jerusalem, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri. When they were at the great stone which is in Gibeon, Amasa went before them. And Joab's garment that he had put on was girded unto him, and upon it a girdle with a sword fastened upon his loins in the sheath thereof; and as he went forth it fell out. And Joab said to Amasa, Art thou in health, my brother? And Joab took Amasa by the beard with the right hand to kiss him. But Amasa took no heed to the sword that was in Joab's hand: so he smote him therewith in the fifth rib, and shed out his bowels to the ground, and struck him not again; and he died. So Joab and Abishai his brother pursued after Sheba the son of Bichri. And one of Joab's men stood by him, and said, He that favoureth Joab, and he that is for David, let him go after Joab. And Amasa wallowed in blood in the midst of the highway. And when the man saw that all the people stood still, he removed Amasa out of the highway into the field, and cast a cloth upon him, when he saw that every one that came by him stood still. When he was removed out of the highway, all the people went on after Joab, to pursue after Sheba the son of Bichri.-2 Samuel 20:1-13***Over 800 years after Judah was born to Jacob (Israel) and his 1st wife Leah, and Benjamin was born to Jacob and his 2nd wife Rachel, David and his nephews Amasa, Abishai and Joab were born into the tribe of Judah, and Sheba was born into the tribe of Benjamin. David was 30 years old when he became the 2nd king to rule over all of the Israelites in the Promised Land, the land that the Lord God promised to give to Jacob, and to Jacob's father Isaac, and to Isaac's father Abraham (Abram the Hebrew), and to their descendants. Joab won a challenge proposed by David and became commander of the army. Years thereafter, Absalom, the son born to David and Maacah (Maachah/Maakah), had himself proclaimed king while David reigned. David and many of the people loyal to David hurried away from Jerusalem, the royal city. Meanwhile, Absalom sought advice, and was intimate with the 10 concubines David left in Jerusalem, and  appointed Amasa commander of the army. Absalom was killed by Joab  and Joab's 10 armor-bearers, despite a command given by David, and David commanded Amasa to lead the army. Before 70-year-old David died, Solomon, a son born to David and Bathsheba, became the 3rd king to rule over all of the Israelites. At least 925 years after Rehoboam, the son born to Solomon and Naamah, became the 4th king to rule over all of the Israelites, Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, was born. The descendants of Hezron,

an Israelite from the tribe of Judah:

The sons also of Hezron, that were born unto him; Jerahmeel, and Ram, and Chelubai. And Ram begat Amminadab; and Amminadab begat Nahshon, prince of the children of Judah; And Nahshon begat Salma, and Salma begat Boaz, And Boaz begat Obed, and Obed begat Jesse, And Jesse begat his firstborn Eliab, and Abinadab the second, and Shimma the third, Nethaneel the fourth, Raddai the fifth, Ozem the sixth, David the seventh: Whose sisters were Zeruiah, and Abigail. And the sons of Jerahmeel the firstborn of Hezron were, Ram the firstborn, and Bunah, and Oren, and Ozem, and Ahijah. Jerahmeel had also another wife, whose name was Atarah; she was the mother of Onam. And the sons of Ram the firstborn of Jerahmeel were, Maaz, and Jamin, and Eker.-1 Chronicles 2:9-27

-Hezron was born to Pharez, and Pharez was a twin son born to Judah and Tamar. Judah was the 4th son born to Jacob (Israel) and his 1st wife Leah. Jacob was the youngest fraternal twin son born to Isaac and Rebekah. Isaac was born to 100-year-old Abraham (Abram the Hebrew) and 90-year-old Sarah (Sarai).

-Nahshon (Naashon) was a chief leader among the Israelites in the tribe of Judah. Nahshon was not a prince, however, because Nahshon lived at least 350 years before the Israelites demanded to be led by a king in the Promised Land, the land that the Lord God promised to give to Abraham, and Isaac, and to Jacob, and their descendants.

-Boaz was a wealthy Israelite and a relative of Naomi. Naomi was the mother-in-law of Ruth, a Moabite. Ruth was married to Naomi's son Mahlon until Mahlon died. The Moabites were descendants of Abraham and Sarah's nephew Lot, and Lot's oldest daughter, and the son, Moab, born to Lot and his daughter.

-Jesse was the father of at least 2 daughters, Zeruiah and Abigail, and 8 sons, including Eliab, Abinadab, Shammah (Shimma/Shimea), Nethaneel, Raddai, Ozem, and David.

-Abishai was David's nephew, 1 of at least 3 sons born to David's sister Zeruiah. Abishai was a warrior and fought alongside David before and after David became the 2nd king to rule over all of the Israelites in the Promised Land. During David's last fight on the battlefield, Abishai killed Ishbi-benob, a gigantic Philistine, when Ishbi-benob was preparing to kill David.

-Joab was David's nephew, and the brother of Abishai and Asahel. Joab was a warrior and fought alongside David before and after David reigned as king. Joab won a challenge proclaimed by David and became commander of the army, and worked strategically against enemy nations and family disharmony. After Abner unwillingly killed Asahel, Joab killed Abner. Moreover, Joab thrust 3 weapons into the heart of David's son Absalom when Absalom was hanging in a tree after stealing the kingship during David's reign. However, Joab  helped David's son Adonijah proclaim himself king when David was still reigning. Before 70-year-old David died, Solomon, the 2nd child born to David and Bathsheba, became the 3rd king to rule over all of the Israelites, and David spoke to Solomon about Joab. After David died, Solomon commanded mighty warrior Benaiah to kill Joab.

-Amasa was David's nephew, the son of David's sister Abigail. When Absalom stole David's reign, Absalom appointed Amasa commander of the army. After Joab became responsible for Absalom's death, and David prepared to return to Jerusalem, David revealed that Amasa was to be commander of the army. Thus, Amasa replaced Joab, the previous commander. After Amasa failed to return when expected from a mission authorized by David, Joab killed Amasa.

 

-Caleb (Chelubai) was Hezron's son, Hur's father, Uri's grandfather and Bezaleel's great-grandfather. Biblical scholars do not necessarily agree that the Hur, Uri and Bezaleel listed in the above genealogy are the same Hur, Uri and Bezaleel described in the Book of Exodus in the Holy Bible.

-Segub was the son of Hezron, the son-in-law of Machir and the father of Jair.

-Jair was from the tribe of Judah on his paternal side and from the tribe of Manasseh and the clan of Gilead on his maternal side. Jair and 1/2 of the Israelites in the tribe of Manasseh, and all of the Israelites in the tribe of Reuben and all of the Israelites in the tribe of Gad, made their homes on the same side of the Jordan River that the Israelites had wandered through for 40 years after being led away from Egyptian slavery, across the divinely parted Red Sea, and into the desert wilderness of Shur by Moses and Moses'  older brother Aaron. Jair helped the Gileadites acquire more towns and was possibly the judge who led the Israelites between the leadership of Tola and Jephthah.

He Said, and He Similarly Said

The words spoken by King David after Abner, a

rival army commander, killed David's nephew Asahel,

and after Asahel's brother Joab killed Abner: 

And when Abner was returned to Hebron, Joab took him aside in the gate to speak with him quietly, and smote him there under the fifth rib, that he died, for the blood of Asahel his brother. And afterward when David heard it, he said, I and my kingdom are guiltless before the LORD for ever from the blood of Abner the son of Ner: Let it rest on the head of Joab, and on all his father's house; and let there not fail from the house of Joab one that hath an issue, or that is a leper, or that leaneth on a staff, or that falleth on the sword, or that lacketh bread. So Joab and Abishai his brother slew Abner, because he had slain their brother Asahel at Gibeon in the battle. And David said to Joab, and to all the people that were with him, Rend your clothes, and gird you with sackcloth, and mourn before Abner. And King David himself followed the bier. And they buried Abner in Hebron: and the king lifted up his voice, and wept at the grave of Abner; and all the people wept.-2 Samuel 3:27-32

And Benaiah came to the tabernacle of the LORD, and said unto him, Thus saith the king, Come forth. And he said, Nay; but I will die here. And Benaiah brought the king word again, saying, Thus said Joab, and thus he answered me. And the king said unto him, Do as he hath said, and fall upon him, and bury him; that thou mayest take away the innocent blood, which Joab shed, from me, and from the house of my father. And the LORD shall return his blood upon his own head, who fell upon two men more righteous and better than he, and slew them with the sword, my father David not knowing thereof, to wit, Abner the son of Ner, captain of the host of Israel, and Amasa the son of Jether, captain of the host of Judah. Their blood shall therefore return upon the head of Joab, and upon the head of his seed for ever: but upon David, and upon his seed, and upon his house, and  upon his throne, shall there be peace for ever from the LORD. Sounds Like a Plan

King David, the 2nd king to rule over all

of the Israelites in the Promised Land,

and King Hanun, ruler of the Ammonites:

Now it came to pass after this, that Nahash the king of the children of Ammon died, and his son reigned in his stead. And David said, I will shew kindness unto Hanun the son of Nahash, because his father shewed kindness to me. And David sent messengers to comfort him concerning his father. So the servants of David came into the land of the children of Ammon to Hanun, to comfort him.-1 Chronicles 19:1-2

But the princes of the children of Ammon said to Hanun, Thinkest thou that David doth honour thy father, that he hath sent comforters unto thee? are not his servants come unto thee for to search, and to overthrow, and to spy out the land? Wherefore Hanun took David's servants, and shaved them, and cut off their garments in the midst hard by their buttocks, and sent them away.-1 Chronicles 19:3-4

Then there went certain, and told David how the men were served. And he sent to meet them: for the men were greatly ashamed. And the king said, Tarry at Jericho until your beards be grown, and then return.-1 Chronicles 19:5

And when the children of Ammon saw that they had made themselves odious to David, Hanun and the children of Ammon sent a thousand talents of silver to hire them chariots and horsemen out of Mesopotamia, and out of Syria-maachah, and out of Zobah. And the rest of the people he delivered unto the hand of Abishai his brother, and they set themselves in array against the children of Ammon. And he said, If the Syrians be too strong for me, then thou shalt help me: but if the children of Ammon be too strong for thee, then I will help thee. Be of good courage, and let us behave ourselves valiantly for our people, and for the cities of our God: and let the LORD do that which is good in his sight. So Joab and the people that were with him drew nigh before the Syrians unto the battle; and they fled before him.-1 Chronicles 19:10-14

Deep Sleep

An incident that occurred when King Saul, the first

king to rule over the Israelites in the Promised Land,

was seeking David, who was anointed to reign as king:

And the Ziphites came unto Saul to Gibeah, saying, Doth not David hide himself in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon? Then Saul arose, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thousand chosen men of Israel with him, to seek David in the wilderness of Ziph. And Saul pitched in the hill of Hachilah, which is before Jeshimon, by the way. But David abode in the wilderness, and he saw that Saul came after him into the wilderness. David therefore sent out spies, and understood that Saul was come in very deed. And David arose, and came to the place where Saul had pitched: and David beheld the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his host: and Saul lay in the trench, and the people pitched round about him. Then answered David and said to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, brother to Joab, saying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And Abishai said, I will go down with thee. So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the trench, and his spear stuck in the ground at his bolster: but Abner and the people lay round about him. Then said Abishai to David, God hath delivered thine enemy into thine hand this day: now therefore let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear even to the earth at once, and I will not smite him the second time. And David said to Abishai, Destroy him not: for who can stretch forth his hand against the LORD's anointed, and be guiltless? David said furthermore, As the LORD liveth, the LORD shall smite him; or his day shall come to die; or he shall descend into battle, and perish. The LORD forbid that I should stretch forth mine hand against the LORD's anointed: but, I pray thee, take thou now the spear that is at his bolster, and the cruse of water, and let us go. So David took the spear and the cruse of water from Saul's bolster; and they gat them away, and no man saw it, nor knew it, neither awaked: for they were all asleep; because a deep sleep from the LORD was fallen upon them. Then David went over to the other side, and stood on the day of an hill afar off; a great space being between them: And David cried to the people, and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, Answerest thou not, Abner? Then Abner answered and said, Who art thou that criest to the king? And David said to Abner, Art not thou a valiant man? and who is like to thee in Israel? wherefore then hast thou not kept thy lord the king? for there came one of the people in to destroy the king thy lord. This thing is not good that thou hast done. As the LORD liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not kept your master, the LORD's anointed. And now see where the king's spear is, and the cruse of water that was at his bolster. And Saul knew David's voice, and said, Is this thy voice, my son David? And David said, It is my voice, my lord, O king. And he said, Wherefore doth my lord thus pursue after his servant? for what have I done? or what evil is in mine hand? Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his servant. If the LORD have stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering: but if they be the children of men, cursed be they before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of the LORD, saying, Go, serve other gods. Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth before the face of the LORD: for the king of Israel is come out to seek a flea, as when one doth hunt a partridge in the mountains. Then said Saul, I have sinned: return, my son David: for I will no more do thee harm, because my soul was precious in thine eyes this day: behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly. And David answered and said, Behold the king's spear! and let one of the young men come over and fetch it. The LORD render to every man his righteousness and his faithfulness; for the LORD delivered thee into my hand to day, but I would not stretch forth mine hand against the LORD's anointed. And, behold, as thy life was much set by this day in mine eyes, so let my life be much set by in the eyes of the LORD, and let him deliver me out of all tribulation. Then Saul said to David, Blessed be thou, my son David:  thou shalt both do great things, and also shalt still prevail.
