And the LORD came, and stood, and called as at other times, Samuel, Samuel. Then Samuel answered, Speak; for thy servant heareth. And the LORD said to Samuel, Behold, I will do a thing in Israel, at which both the ears of every one that heareth it shall tingle. In that day I will perform against Eli all things which I have spoken concerning his house: when I begin, I will also make an end. For I have told him that I will judge his house for ever for the iniquity which he knoweth; because his sons made themselves vile, and he restrained them not. And therefore I have sworn unto the house of Eli, that the iniquity of Eli's house shall not be purged with sacrifice nor offering for ever. And Samuel lay until the morning, and opened the doors of the house of the LORD. And Samuel feared to shew Eli the vision. Then Eli called Samuel, and said, Samuel, my son. And he answered, Here am I. And he said, What is the thing that the LORD hath said unto thee? I pray thee hide it not from me: God do so to thee, and more also, if thou hide any thing from me of all the things that he said unto thee. And Samuel told him every whit, and hid nothing from him. And he said, It is the LORD: let him do what seemeth him good.-1 Samuel 3:10-18***The Israelites descended from Abraham (Abram the Hebrew) and Sarah (Sarai), Isaac and Rebekah, and Isaac and Rebekah's youngest fraternal twin son Jacob (Israel). Joshua was an Israelite from the tribe of Ephraim, descended from Jacob and his 2nd wife Rachel, their firstborn son Joseph and his wife Asenath, and Joseph and Asenath's 2nd born son Ephraim, whom Jacob proclaimed to be his own son. Sometime after Joshua led the Israelites across the divinely parted Jordan River  and onto the Promised Land, Joshua and the Israelites conquered much of the land and many of the idol worshiping inhabitants, according to the commands of the Lord God. In Shiloh, the Israelites stationed the transportable tabernacle, the Tent of Meeting wherein the Lord God met with his treasured and chosen people. Eli the priest and his sons Hophni and Phinehas were from the tribe of Levi, descended from Jacob and his 1st wife Leah, and Jacob and Leah's 3rd born son Levi. Hophni and Phinehas did not obey the commands of the Lord God, and did as they pleased regarding the meat offerings that the Israelites brought to be sacrificed. Moreover, Hophni and Phinehas indulged in sexually immoral behavior. A prophet proclaimed the words of the Lord God to Eli, including the forthcoming judgments and consequences. Samuel was born into the tribe of Levi to Elkanah and Hannah. After Samuel was weaned, Hannah fulfilled her vow to the Lord God and took Samuel to live and serve the Lord God at the tabernacle complex in Shiloh. Sometime thereafter, the Lord God gave Samuel a message for Eli. When Samuel the priest, prophet and judge was elderly, and Samuel's sons Joel (Vashni) and Abiah (Abijah) were not obeying the commands of the Lord God, and King Nahash and his fellow Ammonites were preparing to attack, the Israelite elders demanded that Samuel appoint a king to lead them. Samuel was not pleased with their request. The divinely inspired Scriptures of the Holy Bible reveal that Samuel prayed to the Lord God, and proclaimed the words of the Lord God to the Israelites, and anointed Saul, from the tribe of Jacob and Rachel's 2nd and last son Benjamin, to reign as king. At least twice, Saul did not obey the commands of the Lord God. While Saul reigned, the Lord God sent Samuel to anoint David, from the tribe of Jacob and Leah's 4th born son Judah, to reign as king.
