Now therefore fear the LORD, and serve him in sincerity and in truth: and put away the gods which your fathers served on the other side of the flood, and in Egypt; and serve ye the LORD. And if it seem evil unto you to serve the LORD, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD. And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the LORD, to serve other gods; for the LORD our God, he it is that brought us up and our fathers out of the land of Egypt, from the house of bondage, and which did those great signs in our sight, and preserved us in all the way wherein we went, and among all the people through whom we passed: and the LORD drave out from before us all the people, even the Amorites which dwelt in the land: therefore will we also serve the LORD; for he is our God. And Joshua said unto the people, Ye cannot serve the LORD: for he is an holy God; he is a jealous God; he will not forgive your transgressions nor your sins. If ye forsake the LORD, and serve strange gods, then he will turn and do you hurt, and consume you, after that he hath done you good. And the people said unto Joshua, Nay; but we will serve the LORD. And Joshua said unto the people, Ye are witnesses against yourselves that ye have chosen you the LORD, to serve him. And they said, We are witnesses. Now therefore put away, said he, the strange gods which are among you, and incline your heart unto the LORD God of Israel. And the people said unto Joshua, The Lord our God will we serve, and his voice will we obey.-Joshua 24:14-24***In Ur, in southern Mesopotamia, Abraham (Abram the Hebrew) and Sarah (Sarai),  lived in an idol worshiping environment. The Lord God appeared to Abraham and told Abraham to depart from his country and kin and come into the land he would be shown. Abraham, Sarah, their father Terah, and nephew Lot journeyed away from Ur and began living in Haran. After 205-year-old Terah died in Haran, Abraham, Sarah and Lot journeyed with their servants and possessions to Canaan. The Lord God told Abraham that he would make Abraham into a great nation and bless him, and the Lord God promised to give Canaan to Abraham and Abraham's descendants. The Lord God revealed that Abraham's descendants would undergo 400 years of oppression in a foreign land and Abraham would be the father of many nations. When Abraham was 86 years old, Ishmael was born to Abraham and Hagar, Sarah's maidservant. When Abraham was 100 years old, Isaac was born to Abraham and 90-year-old Sarah. When Isaac was 40 years old, he married Rebekah, Abraham and Sarah's grandniece. When Isaac was 60 years old, fraternal twin sons Esau (Edom) and Jacob (Israel) were born to Isaac and Rebekah. Decades thereafter, Jacob married Rebekah's nieces Leah and Rachel. Reuben, Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Zebulun, and Dinah were born to Jacob and Leah. Dan and Naphtali were born to Jacob and Bilhah, Rachel's maidservant. Gad and Asher were born to Jacob and Zilpah, Leah's maidservant. When Jacob was 130 years old, he moved with his family from Canaan to Egypt, the country wherein Joseph was sold to Potiphar, an Egyptian official, and imprisoned, and was proclaimed second-in-command.  Sometime after 147-year-old Jacob died in Egypt and his body was buried in Canaan, and Joseph and his siblings were dead, their descendants the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt. Miriam and her younger brothers Aaron and Moses were from the tribe of Levi. When Moses was 80 years old and Aaron was 83, they led the Israelites away from Egypt, across the divinely parted Red Sea, and into the desert wilderness of Shur, according to the commands of the Lord God. Months thereafter, in the desert wilderness of Sinai, in the region of Mount Sinai, the Israelites heard the voice of the Lord God proclaim the Ten Commandments to them. When Moses was upon Mount Sinai with the Lord God for 40 days and nights, Aaron made a golden calf that the Israelites worshiped. In Shittim, the Israelites worshiped idols with the Moabites, the descendants of Lot and Lot's oldest daughter and their son Moab. During the 40-year journey to Canaan, the Promised Land, Miriam died and was buried in Kadesh in the desert wilderness of Zin. Upon Mount Hor, 123-year-old Aaron died and was buried. When 120-year-old Moses went upon Mount Nebo, the Lord God showed Moses the Promised Land, and Moses died and was divinely buried. Joshua, Moses' successor, was from the tribe of Ephraim, descended from Joseph and his wife Asenath, and Joseph and Asenath's 2nd born son Ephraim, whom Jacob proclaimed to be his own son. Joshua led the Israelites across the divinely parted Jordan River and onto the land that the Lord God promised to give to Abraham, and Isaac, and to Jacob and their descendants. Then the king of Assyria came up throughout all the land, and went up to Samaria, and besieged it three years. In the ninth year of Hoshea the king of Assyria took Samaria, and carried Israel away into Assyria, and placed them in Halah and in Habor by the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes. For so it was, that the children of Israel had sinned against the LORD their God, which had brought them up out of the land of Egypt, from under the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and had feared other gods, And walked in the statutes of the heathen, whom the LORD cast out from before the children of Israel, and of the kings of Israel, which they had made. And the children of Israel did secretly those things that were not right against the LORD their God, and they built them high places in all their cities, from the tower of the watchmen to the fenced city. And they set them up images and groves in every high hill, and under every green tree: And there they burnt incense in all the high places, as did the heathen whom the LORD carried away before them; and wrought wicked things to provoke the LORD to anger: For they served idols, whereof the LORD had said unto them, Ye shall not do this thing. Yet the LORD testified against Israel, and against Judah, by all the prophets, and by all the seers, saying, Turn ye from your evil ways, and keep my commandments and my statutes, according to all the law which I commanded your fathers, and which I sent to you by my servants the prophets. Notwithstanding they would not hear, but hardened their necks, like to the neck of their fathers, that did not believe in the LORD their God. And they rejected his statutes, and his covenant that he made with their fathers, and his testimonies which he testified against them; and they followed vanity, and became vain, and went after the heathen that were round about them, concerning whom the LORD had charged them, that they should not do like them. And they left all the commandments of the LORD their God, and made them molten images, even two calves, and made a grove, and worshiped all the host of heaven, and served Baal. And they caused their sons and their daughters to pass through the fire, and used divination and enchantments, and sold themselves to do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger.-2 Kings 17:5-17***After the death of Joshua, the Israelites were led by elders, judges, or their own minds. Samuel the priest, prophet and judge was from the tribe of Levi. When Samuel was elderly, and his sons Joel (Vashni) and Abiah were wicked, and King Nahash and his fellow Ammonites were preparing to attack, the Israelite elders demanded that Samuel appoint a king to lead them. Samuel prayed to the Lord God, and proclaimed the words of the Lord God to the Israelites, and anointed Saul, from the tribe of Benjamin, to reign as king. Saul did not obey the commands of the Lord God. While Saul reigned, the Lord God sent Samuel to anoint David, from the tribe of Judah, to reign as king. David became a musician and an armor-bearer for Saul, and killed Goliath the gigantic Philistine, and entered into a covenant with Jonathan, Saul's son, and married Saul's daughter Michal, and lived on the run from Saul. After Saul's self-inflicted death on the battlefield, men from the tribe of Judah anointed 30-year-old David to reign, and David reigned only over the tribe of Judah. Saul's son Ishbosheth reigned over the other Israelite tribes. After Ishbosheth was murdered, the Israelite elders journeyed to David and David made a covenant with them. The elders anointed 37-year-old David, and David became the 2nd king to reign over all of the Israelites in the Promised Land. Solomon, the 2nd child born to David and Bathsheba, was the 3rd king to reign. Rehoboam, the son born to Solomon and Naamah, was the 4th king to reign over all of the Israelites. After Rehoboam gave a specific answer, the Israelites split into 2 kingdoms, according to the will of the Lord God, due to the idolatry and other wickedness of Solomon. Judah was the nation in the south, Jerusalem was the royal city and Rehoboam was the 1st king to reign. Israel was the northern nation, Samaria was the final royal city and Jeroboam was the 1st king to reign. King Pekah was the 18th king to reign over all of the Israelites in the Promised Land. During Pekah's reign, the Assyrians invaded the kingdom and King Tiglath-pileser, ruler of Assyria, began taking Israelites to Assyria. During the reign of King Hoshea, the 19th king to rule the northern nation, the Assyrians conquered Samaria, according to the will of the Lord God, due to the idolatry and other wickedness of the Israelites. Rehoboam's great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-great-grandson Jehoiakim (Eliakim), the 17th king to rule Judah, the Babylonians (Chaldeans) invaded Judah and Jerusalem and King Nebuchadnezzar, ruler of Babylon, began looting the temple of the Lord. During the reign of Jehoiakim's son King Jehoiachin (Jeconiah/Coniah), the 18th king to rule Judah, the Babylonians took more prominent Israelites to Babylon. During the reign of Jehoiakim's brother King Zedekiah (Mattaniah), the 19th king to rule Judah, the Babylonians  conquered Jerusalem, according to the will of the Lord God, due to the idolatry and other wickedness of the Israelites. Over 500 years after Israelites began returning to Judah and Jerusalem, Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, was born.
