The Old and The Bold

These be the names of the mighty men whom David had: The Tachmonite that sat in the seat, chief among the captains; the same was Adino the Eznite; he lift up his spear against eight hundred, whom he slew at one time. And after him was Eleazar the son of Dodo the Ahohite, one of the three mighty men with David, when they defied the Philistines that were there gathered together to battle, and the men of Israel were gone away: He arose, and smote the Philistines until his hand was weary, and his hand clave unto the sword: and the Lord wrought a great victory that day; and the people returned after him only to spoil.-2 Samuel 23:8-10***King Saul was the 1st king to reign over the Israelites in the Promised Land. At least twice, Saul did not obey the commands of the Lord God. While Saul reigned, the Lord God sent Samuel, the priest, prophet and judge who had anointed Saul, to anoint David to reign as king. Sometime thereafter, while David worked as a shepherd for his father Jesse, David began serving as a musician and an armor-bearer for Saul. After David killed Goliath the gigantic Philistine, David stayed in Saul's service full-time. Jonathan, Saul's son, made a covenant with David. The Israelite women sang of David higher than they sang of Saul. Saul was angry and wanted to kill David, and sent David on missions to get killed, and told others, including Jonathan, to kill David. Saul's daughter Michal married David and helped David escape from their home. When David stayed in a cave in Adullam, in the portion of the Promised Land allotted to the tribe of Judah, David's birth tribe, approximately 400 distressed, discontented and impoverished men joined David. Sometime after David and his men took David's parents to live among the Moabites, the kinfolk of David's great-grandmother Ruth, David learned that Israelites in Keilah were being robbed by the Philistines. David asked the Lord God if he should launch an attack, and the Lord God told David to fight the Philistines. The men with David were afraid. The Lord God assured David of victory, and David and his men were victorious. David and his men fought other battles and many mighty warriors fought alongside David and his men. After Jonathan and his brothers Malchishua and Abinadab (Ishui) were killed by the Philistines, and Saul's self-inflicted death on the same battlefield, men from the tribe of Judah anointed 30-year-old David, and David began to reign only over the tribe of Judah. Saul's son Ishbosheth (Eshbaal) reigned over the other Israelite tribes. Sometime after Ishbosheth was murdered, Israelite elders went to David and David made a covenant with them. The elders anointed David, and 37 1/2-year-David became the 2nd king to reign over all of the Israelites in the Promised Land. David and his men, including Eleazar, were known for being valiant and brave. Eleazar was possibly from the clan of Ahoah and the tribe of Benjamin, the birth tribe of Saul. Over 900 years after Solomon, the 2nd son born to David and Bathsheba, became the 3rd king to reign over all of the Israelites, and 70-year-old David died, Jesus the Christ, the Son of God, was born.
